Empower 2018: Trauma-Informed Care

Edee Franklin, the founder of Sanctum House, is an honored speaker at EMPOWER 2018, presented by the Michigan Abolitionist Project (MAP).

empower (verb) – 1. give someone the authority or power to do something; 2. make someone stronger and more confident

The Empower conference is an annual MAP event that addresses high-level challenges and opportunities pertaining to human trafficking in Michigan. Empower is designed to equip experts and experienced community advocates who are working towards collaborative solutions.

Our 2018 topic is ttrauma-informed care, offering specialized training in trauma to improve our response to human trafficking in Michigan. For service providers, advocates, outreach organizations, NGOs and state agency workers.

Understanding Trauma and Trauma Informed Care
Presenter: Dr. Michelle Munro-Kramer
Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing

Dr. Michelle Munro-Kramer’s program of research focuses on trauma, comprehensive care of vulnerable populations, and missed opportunities for care within domestic and international contexts. Her research projects approach these topics using a trauma-informed and patient-centered lens. She will address how trauma impacts the brain and body and explore the principles of trauma-informed care.

Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)
Presenter: Maggie Dunn MA, LLPC
Co-Founder and Director of House of Providence

Maggie is a therapist and a woman on a mission to advocate for the orphan. In response to the orphan crisis in Michigan, Maggie and her husband Jason have founded the House of Providence, a safe and permanent home for foster children who are most at risk. Their slogan; “Until every child has a home.”
